Mari. 20. A blog dedicated to every version of Sherlock Holmes, from Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories to Robert Downey Jr. to BBC's Sherlock and more. Our friends at Wessex Press sent us these two books to read and review and WE ARE EXCITED!
The first one is A Study In Celluloid: A Producer’s Account of Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes by Michael Cox, who (obviously) served as the producer of the Granada television series. Originally published in 1986, it’s been out of print for many years (and those copies are going for £100-£250!), but Wessex Press have brought it back! If you don’t want to wait until we’ve finished it, you can buy it at Gasogene Books. We’ve included one of many behind the scenes photographs from the book. Some are just so sweet, and there’s lots from filming of The Final Problem (including one of Jeremy Brett sort of dancing in the background).
The second is The Illustrated Speckled Band: The Original 1910 Stage Production in Script and Photographs by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and edited by Leslie S. Klinger. It’s the play ACD wrote out with tons of photographs from when it was performed! So much fun and so great to look at. We’ve included one of them. You can also get this from Gasogene Books.
We hope to have reviews for you very soon, in the mean time we’re going to go geek out about these.
His Last Bow 1917
Publicity shot of Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke for an unfinished episode of Granada’s series.
Edit for clarity: This was intially filmed for inclusion in “The Second Stain”( Sherlock reminiscing). Producers thought an entire episode could be created from it and shelved the scene for later use. No episode was ever made and the film was destroyed.
